Attitude towards Pets, Peace of Mind, Mental Health


Purpose: The current research investigated interrelationship among attitude towards pets, peace of mind and mental health of pet-owners and non-pet owners and the role of demographic variables; (age, education, gender, socio-economic status) on these variables.

Methodology: 400 participants (200pet-owners; 200non pet-owners) were selected from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Abbottabad, Haripur, Battagram, Manshera) through convenient sampling. The Pet Attitude Scale, Peace of Mind Scale, and Mental Health Inventory were used.

Findings: The outcomes displayed that positive attitude towards pets is positively correlated with peace of mind and mental health. Peace of mind and mental health are greater in pet owners than non-pet owners. Positive attitude towards pets increases with the age. Positive attitude towards pets and mental health are greater in females than males. Additionally, positive attitude towards pets and peace of mind are more in postgraduates than undergraduates. Similarly, positive attitude towards pets, peace of mind and mental health are greater in individuals belonging to middle class than upper and lower class

Implications: The findings will be beneficial for health practitioners as well as for general population to understand that positive attitude towards pets is associated with peace of mind and mental health.
