The Impact of Ethnocentrism on Intercultural Communication of High School Pakistani-Canadian Muslims
Keywords:

Language and Culture have an impact on intercultural relationships in a multilingual society. Due to the presence of diverse cultures and their practices, intercultural communication often faces several barriers. Globally, some cultural, social, and religious groups enjoy a prestigious position in every society. However, the way they perceive, engage, and act with other minority communities has an impact on communication. Therefore, this study aims to explore the role of ethnocentrism among High School Canadian Muslims. It further investigates the impact of ethnocentric or ethnorelative beliefs on intercultural communication practices. Data was collected using a qualitative case study design. 05 participants aged 16 to 20 years were selected using purposive and snowball sampling who were enrolled in a high school in Canada. Semi-structured interviews were conducted
with the participants, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The analysis of the data shows that group solidarity acts as a main pillar of Canadian society and diverse ideological and cultural beliefs are promoted within the educational sector which facilitates intercultural communication. However, the religious sentiments, emotions, and
practices besides the positive attributes hinder communication between the different groups. It also raises issues of hate speech, and group inferiority and leads to physical violence.
