Portrayal of Women in Contemporary Cinema: A Comparative Analysis of Lollywood and Bollywood Movies

Abstract

The present study aiming to evaluate and explore how much women do portray as an object of the male gaze, submissive, empowered and self-awarded regarding basic rights in film content by comparison of Bollywood with Lollywood. To make the investigation accurate and concrete, content analysis has been adopted in which both Bollywood and Lollywood G-rated 20 movies from 2009 to 2018 taken into account by establishing categories. The findings of content analysis suggested that Bollywood is projecting female empowerment more than Lollywood and disseminating the same female images and producing the same level of the male gaze. A comparative analysis between two different cultured countries (secular and Islamic) with the same issues resulted equal in the portrayal of female is alarming.
