Causes of Increasing Drugs Addiction among Youth: Opinions of University Students in Pakistan

The use of drugs is detrimental to every individual. Drug abuse is a chronic issue of current times, this destroys the strength of future generations as well as the social order of humanity. The study aimed to explore the opinions of educated youth about the increasing attraction of drugs in institutions and society. The role of institutions has a stronger impact on the social and personal life of the students. The rapid involvement of youth in drug abuse is alarming singe for parents and for educational institutions. For this purpose, action research was conducted in which both male and female students were included in the population. Further, from the total population with the help of a convenient sampling technique departments were selected, and with snowball sampling technique two fifty (250) students (male.150 and female.100) were taken from three (03) public sector universities of Multan, an attitude scale was developed for the data collection. The statements of the scale comprised twenty-five (25) restricted response items based on five points Likert rating scale and two (02) open-ended questions to obtain the reliability of the research. The quantitative part of the questionnaire was analyzed on the basis of the attitude scale and qualitative questions were analyzed with the thematic analysis technique. Furthermore, it was found that drug abuse is increasing among youth due to the negligence of parents, academia, and teachers. Further, suggested that parents and teachers should consider their role seriously in the eradication of drug abuse from educational institutions.
