Post-Traumatic Symptoms and Job Satisfaction among Health Care Workers after COVID-19: A Mediating Role of Emotional Intelligence

Abstract

Purpose: COVID-19 has been around since 2019, and it started affecting millions of people in 2020. People from all professions were affected by COVID, but healthcare workers were at the front lines. This study explored the relationship among post-traumatic symptoms, emotional intelligence, and job satisfaction among healthcare workers after COVID-19.

Design/Methodology/Approach: A correlational study was conducted in different hospitals and clinics in Punjab. 200 healthcare workers who worked with COVID patients, with an age range of 25–50 years. The Post-traumatic Scale (NSESSS), TEIQue-SF for emotional intelligence, and Job Satisfaction Scale were used to gather data.  

Findings: The findings of the study exhibited a significant negative relationship between post-traumatic symptoms, emotional intelligence, and job satisfaction. An independent t-test revealed that men (M = 126.72, SD = 16.13) are more emotionally intelligent than women (M = 123.72, SD = 12.732), whereas post-traumatic symptoms are higher in females (M = 16.02, SD = 8.634) than men (M = 15.34, SD = 8.614). The results also revealed a partial mediating role of emotional intelligence between post-traumatic symptoms and job satisfaction. 

Implications/Originality/Value: Healthcare workers should focus on their emotional intelligence to enhance their job performance.
