Effect of Favourable Environment on Employee Commitment in the Service Context

Abstract

In order to understand the challenges faced by hotel staff in Malaysia in terms of service, the hotel industry attempts to determine factors that impact on the commitment of employees. The objectives of this research, based on the Social Exchange Theory (SET), is to enrich this understanding by examine the impact of the favourable environment (FE) on the commitment of employees to the hotel industry in Malaysia. Samples were recorded from 280 hotel management staff in Malaysia using the survey questionnaire. We distributed 450 questionnaires to hotel staff in Malaysia, out of which 280 were returned, so the response rate was 62%. The research findings have shown that FE significantly positive impacts the commitment of employees in hotels in Malaysia. It was concluded from the research that a better working climate keeps employees happy and clearly enhances the productivity and efficacy of both employees and the organisation. In consistent with the findings of this analysis, it is suggested that hotel management in Malaysia offer a similar clean environment in line with current obstacles and the developmental perspective of workers in various organisations. This study is of importance to both decision makers and policy makers.
