Abstract

The current study aims to find the reasons and cure of school dropouts at secondary level in Pakistan. The study's objectives were to find the head teachers', teachers', students', and parents' perception regarding the reasons behind being dropped out, also to look into the factors which affect the rate of dropouts. The research used mixed method approach with explanatory sequential design. Teachers (104), dropout students (156 male and female with their parents) made the population of this research using universal sampling techniques for head teachers (26) and purposive sampling for teachers in the years 2013 to 2016. Questionnaire for teachers, head teachers and dropped out students were used while parents were interviewed. Percentage, frequency and mean score statistics were used for data analysis. The 36% participants replied poverty as main cause of being dropped out. Other factors include delinquencies, awareness not provided, structure of the family, parents with lesser or no education, problems in transport etc.. A non-formal curriculum was recommended for the dropped-out students in public sector schools. The headteachers should be given proper training. Similarly, follow-up programs may be conducted to bring dropped out students back to the school premises.
